Pre-Columbian, Oaxaca, Mexico, Zapotec culture, Monte Alban IV, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A remarkable pottery incensario in the form of a Zapotec deity elaborately adorned with a plumed headdress and a sizable pectoral as well as prominent glyphs on his chest and brow. Figures such as this, which commonly appear on urns from Oaxaca, have been identified variously as Cocijo, the Zapotec god of rain and lightning; Pitao Cozobi, the Zapotec god of maize; or their impersonator. Note the figure's pierced eyes, allowing smoke to emit not only from above the figure's headdress, but also from each eye socket, creating a dramatic and mysterious presentation. Professionally repaired with restoration; all done very well and difficult to notice. Chip to back rim, and nicks and abrasions to surface, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with good remaining detail.
