JUDAS ULLULAQ (1937-1999) Uqsuqtuuq (Gjoa Haven)
Drum Dancer with Singer, 1990s
whalebone, antler, muskox horn, and stone, drummer, with inset tools: 9.5 x 4.5 x 4.5 in (24.1 x 11.4 x 11.4 cm)
spirit, with insets, 7.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 in (19.1 x 11.4 x 6.3 cm)
signed, "ᐅᓗᓚ".
Provenance
Private Collection, Toronto.
This endearing duo likely dates to the latter phase of the artists’ career when he was arguably less concerned about minute detail and more interested in emphasizing his signature “wow factor”. This somewhat judicious investment of effort was perhaps linked either to his declining health or to the unprecedented demand for his work. Ullulaq was perhaps the foremost Inuit expressionist and one can imagine Judas wielding his power grinder much like an abstract expressionist might use his brush. The fact that this sculpture might have been quickly made by no means detracts from its’ visual appeal. One senses that the surprised drummer has somehow conjured a spirit who seems to be singing along to the beat of the drum!
