Description
Important Pre-Columbian Sican funerary mask & pectoral from Peru, ca. 750-1300 CE. Hammered silver alloy sheets in the form of a large mask with tab-like ears and large ear ornaments. Attached are several danglers in different shapes including two bird-shaped danglers hanging from each ear ornament. The eyes each have lapis lazuli which form the iris of each eye. Lapis lazuli is a semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color. The mask comes together with a fantastic ensemble of a pectoral which depicts a scene of several fishermen on three boats, all holding oars and fishing gear with birds and manta rays depicted. Circular disc danglers surround the fishing scene. A fantastic example of its kind. Mask measures 12" x 6", Pectoral measures 3 1/4" x 9 3/8" L.
