Description
Pre-Columbian Alamito stone funerary mask from Argentina, ca. 200 BC-250 AD. A life-size, humanoid mask made by hand from a dense, gray volcanic stone that exudes a disturbing presence. The prominent brow ridge, which almost resembles the outline of a helmet-like coiffure or headgear, takes center stage on the mask. It continues to an elevated nasal bridge and a rectangular nose. The eyes and mouth are represented by annular drilled holes, giving the vizard a simple yet fearsome face. Eight circular perforations pierce the sides of the mask for attachment, and the reverse is slightly concave. 7 3/4" H.x 5 1/2" W.
