Description
Greek and Macedonian Composite Embroidery, 19th C. Constructed from a blend of cotton and wool, enriched with metallic thread, and backed with linen, this composite textile is a harmonious amalgamation of history. Composites like this were created by repurposing scraps from older Greek and Ottoman embroideries. In this particular piece, the central component hails from Macedonia, adorned with the darker inner border sourced from the bottom of a skirt in Attica, and the vibrant red outside border, possibly originating from Macedonia or Greece. Notably, the embroidery fragments used in these composites often reflect the most recent vintage at the center, while older pieces gracefully line the edges. Size: 29'' x 28'' (74 x 71 cm). Provenance: Ex Yosi Barzilai collection.
