Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A tranquil cast-brass figure of Buddha seated in half lotus position atop a pedestal with hands in the Bhumisparsha or Subduing Mara / Earth Witness mudra. In the calling the earth to witness Mudra, the Buddha's left hand rests on his lap with palm upright and his right hand touches the earth. This Mudra symbolizes the moment of Buddha's enlightenment when the demon Mara bombarded Buddha with demons, monsters, violent storms, and 3 seductive daughters. Remaining steadfast the Buddha testified to his meritorious past by pointing to the earth and calling the Earth Goddess, Thorani, who then raised a torrential flood, drowning Mara and his army of demons. Here, Buddha is dressed in monk's garb with a Sanghati robe draping his left shoulder as a prominent ushnisha crowns his head. A banner adorned with lotus flower motifs falls to the front of the throne, just beneath Buddha's legs. Size: 4.8" L x 7.5" W x 10" H (12.2 cm x 19 cm x 25.4 cm)
