Description
**Originally Listed At $600**
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin period, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful cast brass rendition of the Buddha seated upon a tiered pedestal, in the full lotus position, upright posture, with one hand in his lap and the other resting on his knee gesturing to the ground in the Bhumisparsha - or "earth witness" - mudra. Wearing a folded robe over his left shoulder, the deity's rounded face is serene with downcast eyes beneath heavy lids and sweeping brows, a cupid bow mouth, and elongated ear lobes signifying his renunciation of materialistic wealth, all beneath a tightly coiled coiffure and a flaming ushnisha finial. The hollow base is infilled with brick-and-mortar material from when this sculpture was part of a temple niche or shrine, and the surface has developed a lovely green patina. Size: 5.1" W x 9.6" H (13 cm x 24.4 cm)
Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 2000s
