Description
Joseph's Coat Quilt measuring 78x93". This quilt is from the Mary Schafer Collection. She was the quilter and collector from the book Mary Schafer - American Quilt Maker by Gwen Marston. It is comprised of 35 blocks, 8.5x8.5", set straight, 5 by 7, with a scrappy 2" sashing, off white cornerstones, and inner border, and a 10" off white outer border. It is hand and machine pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. Thin polyester batting, and an off white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with an applied off white binding, by hand. Top made by Betty Harriman, finished by Mary Schafer 1984. MARY SCHAFER: AMERICAN QUILT MAKER pg 139: “Betty had all of the patches cut out for Joseph’s Coat and had started the blocks. Mary finished the blocks, pieced the sashing, and put the quilt together.” Photo on pg 138. Many of the fabrics in the top are from the 1960s to the 1980s. Very good condition, 2 small line discolorations on borders. The hanging sleeve was placed on the wrong end; the flower in the middle block is upside down when hung.
