A very rare archaic example of a mask with deep well handled and worn surface, classic raised facial scar designs, zig zag coiffure and kaolin clay pigments. Idoma peoples, Cross River, Nigeria, West Africa. The mask measures 8 x 6 inches, 10 inches tall on custom display stand. Provenance: LOT 84, SOTHEBY'S, NEW YORK - MAY 6, 1994Tribal Art with an estuimate of $6000-$9000.00 , also The Dr's Israel & Michaela Samuelly, NYC. Also a private New Jersey collection since 2000.
Condition
Fair, eroded, losses to one side of mask, extremely well weathered worn, what remains is strong and stable.
