Description
This rare ancient terracotta clay relic of a kneeling devotee dates back to the fourteenth and fifteenth century tradition of figurative representations in fired clay which have been found at a number of sites in the Bamana region near Bougouni and Diola, mali, Africa. Bankoni elongated figures such as this one, featuring kneeling female figure, may be an artistic precursor to more recent Bamana wood sculptures devoted to similar subjects. The idol measures 10.5 inches tall x 7.5 inches deep. Provenance: Ex Eugene and Harriet Becker collection, New York, also a private New Jersey collection.
Condition
