Description
Extraordinary Glazed and Painted Pine Cupboard, possibly Middlebury, Vermont, early 19th century. The molded cornice applied to case above two joined fifteen-light cupboard doors opening onto four fixed shelves, the projecting lower half with molding applied to front and returns over joined panel doors opening onto two-shelf interior, raised on cut-out bracket feet conforming with serpentine bottom edge of skirt, the back lined with five rabbeted full-height boards, old light gray paint and original turnbuckles, (minor imperfections, mid-molding on the left and right sides replaced), 162cm wide, 40cm deep, 223cm high (64in wide, 16 5/8in deep, 88in high). Note Anna Jessica Stewart Swift (1871-1982) was considered 'the oldest living Vermonter' upon her death at age 110. She had lived on Stewart Lane, presently known as the Swift House Inn, since 1880. According to a letter from Lapham & Dibble Gallry dated 14 October 1982, the cupboard served as a bookcase in the Carriage House office of Swift's husband, Charles May Swift (1854-1929), who was related to a member of the Rogers Rangers, a British military force in colonial America.
