Chair produced by William Callaghan, a London-based optician and supplier of telescopes, et. al., referred to as an Astronomer's Chair, likely designed to correctly situate the user of a telescope in a home-observatory.
This chair serves as an early example steam-bending with minimal ornament, whose form is derived exactly as a product of its function. Other similar examples with label referencing an 1873 patent for other designs by Callaghan.
