Item Details
Description
JIMMY SEAWEED, KWAKWA?KA?'WAKW
Model Totem Pole, c. 1960s
wood and acrylic paint, 20.25 x 6.75 x 5.5 in (51.4 x 17.1 x 14 cm)
unsigned.

Provenance
Private Collection, Calgary, AB.

A large Kwakwa?ka?’wakw model pole that features an eagle over a bear holding a seal. Although unsigned, this pole is clearly the work of a Kwakwa?ka?’wakw artist named Jimmy Seaweed as it conforms to the highly distinctive style of signed pieces by that maker. There is a bit of confusion around the details of Jimmy Seaweed’s life as it appears that he was not the author and culture bearer James Sewid (1913-1988), but both men appear to have lived around the same time in the same areas, so it can be difficult to distinguish between them in records.

The pole has a white undercoat with elaborately painted details in bright colours, which probably point to a Gilford Island origin. The white paint is used to outline all the forms which creates a unique stained glass-like effect on the surface of the pole. The figures themselves are carved in a bulgy, rounded style that compliments the painting and emphasizes the shapes of the figures. This pole takes the trend of 20th century Kwakwa?ka?’wakw artists utilizing bright colours and white underpaint to an extreme, but with charming effect.
