Notes:
Eleanor Arnold Clark was the twin sister of Bernita Arnold-Kayser. They both studied at Parsons School of Design in New York, the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, and at the Art Students' League in New York, where they trained under the celebrated abstractionist Hans Hofmann.

Clark was born in Pittsburgh. She began her career focusing on rural landscapes and portraits of friends and family, but she did not cling tenaciously to the realist idiom after 1940. After studying under Hofmann in 1936-1937 she began to move quite sharply toward geometric abstraction and eventually abstract expressionism.

Unlike Hofmann, Clark never became purely non-representational in her work. She continued to use the human figure, albeit highly stylized, to express the range of human emotions and interpersonal motivations. (Sourced from the artist's biography on AskArt.com.)
