Description
Japanese Polychrome Porcelain Figure of a Woman, probably late 19th-early 20th century in date, was produced in the Arita kilns for the Western market. The woman wears a long-sleeved kimono, furisode, that is richly painted with floral motifs on a blue ground. This kind of kimono is the most formal attire for an unmarried woman. Her pose- one hand touching her chin while the other holds up her robe-is frequently seen in the Ukiyo-e prints of beautiful courtesans. The obi is painted with a rich red that contrasts with the blue of the kimono. The sculpture is unsigned.
