Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $400**

Central Asia / Near East, Bactria (Oxus Civilization) to Parthian Empire, ca. 1500 BCE to 200 CE. A pair of cast-bronze and copper vessels for holding kohl or other cosmetics, the tripodal one has a ring around the neck that might have secured a chain with a stopper applicator wand. The stone seal is carved into a 8-pointed star or flower with a suspension loop on the verso. Researchers have various theories on how these stamps were used, including markers for individuals or ownership - however due to repeated patterns in seals - it more likely the patterns were shared symbols of power or protection rather than markers of individuals. Similar marks from seal impressions have been found on pottery as well. Size: 1.75" W x 3.25" H (4.4 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex- Joel Malter collection, California, USA, before 2006
