East Africa, Kenya, Turkana tribe, ca. mid-20th century CE. A set of two forged-carbon-steel fighting knives worn on the wrist known as ararait. The elliptical blades are protected around the exterior edges with thick leather pads reinforced with aluminum ringlets, and the interior perimeters are covered with similar pads to protect the fighter's wrists. Ararait like these examples were employed in close-quarters combat, though they are also used for cutting fruits and meats when not assisting a fighter. Lucite display stands for photography purposes only. Size of largest: 5" W x 4.5" H (12.7 cm x 11.4 cm)

Both pieces have slight bending to overall forms, with light abrasions to blades and leather pads, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina to blades and leather components.
