Item Details
Description
Received in warehouse on October 27, 1883. This factory nickel finish Model 1866 Winchester, Serial Number 164514, was shipped in Order #2603 on August 18, 1898 with its sister rifle, Serial Number 164540. Features a 20" round barrel with full length magazine tube, standard front blade sight and rear carbine sight. Barrel markings just behind the barrel band read "Winchester Repeating Arms, New Haven CT Kings-Improvement Patented March 29, 1866 Oct 1860." Barrel, magazine tube, barrel bands, and sights are all factory nickel finished. 1866 Fourth Model Saddle Ring action. Entire receiver, trigger, trigger guard, loading gate, saddle ring, bolt, hammer, lever and lever knob are all factory nickeled. Chambered in .44 Rimfire. Buttstock and forend are straight grain walnut with standard 1866 carbine dimensions. Forend extends 9" from the action. Buttstock is straight with a nickel buttplate and original factory cleaning rod housed in the buttstock. This condition and factory option are rarely available. Included letter from Cody Firearms Museum confirms all options and manufacture date. CALIBER: .44 RF. S/N: 164514. FFL STATUS: Antique.
Condition
Overall the barrel, magazine tube, barrel rings and sights retain 60% of the original nickel finish. Most of the wear in the barrel is along the top between the rear sight and first barrel band. End of the barrel shows some nickel flaking 1/8" up to 1/2" from the muzzle. Both right and left side of the receiver retain 90% of the factory nickel except for heightened edges and a few spots. There is some flaking on the left side under the saddle ring. The top of the receiver, top of the tang, bolt and hammer retain 90% of the nickel except for high edge wear. Rear sight may be a replacement or refinished. The bottom of the action including the lower tang, trigger, and bottom of the receiver retains 80% original nickel with the 20% loss mostly around the carrier block. Good clean bore with some very light pits, much better than average for a rifle this age. Forend retains 60% original finish with one large ding on the left side, 2" in front of the receiver 1/2" x 1/8", with the rest showing light to moderate handling marks. Buttstock retains 70% original finish with a medium 1/2" x 1/8" half moon indentation from the saddle ring on the left side. Remainder of the stock has light handling marks. Buttplate retains 60% original nickel with most wear being at the heal and toe. Strong mechanics.
