NUTTALL (JEFF) Group of autograph draft manuscripts, corrected typescripts, and other material, comprising: Rough draft of 'Outlaws', marked 'unpublished' (11 notebooks), with a typed introduction by Nuttall, dated 17 February 1974, explaining his attempts to get it published, and bundle of material including photographs relating to the publication; Rough draft of 'Snipe's Spinster' (6 notebooks), with corrected typescript (beginning '...I got my haircut in 1971...'), 79 numbered leaves, 4to, loose in ring binder; Rough draft of 'Man/ Not Man' (2 notebooks), with corrected typescript signed and dated ('Jeff Nuttall 1968'), beginning '...When Ruth gets angry she is like me...', 108 numbered leaves, 4to, loose in ring binder; with 9 notebooks containing miscellaneous works such as Hell ('for LWE TV – Refused'), Jack, various lectures ('...for British Council'), articles ('You Always Remember the First Time') and reviews; 'Common Factors & Vulgar Fractions' (10 notebooks); written in black ink in 38 school exercise books (35 red 'Silvine' exercise books, and another 3 with paper wrappers), 8vo (202 x 160mm.), [1968-1977]; with other material including a signed typescript, a poster for a poetry reading at Brighton College of Art with George Macbeth and Eric Fried organised by Turret Books, correspondence, photographs, postcards etc. (small quantity) Footnotes: Poet, painter, performer, jazz musician, social commentator and much else besides, Jeff Nuttall (1933-2004) was a key force in the 1960's and 1970's British counter-culture movement. This group of published and unpublished material includes the initial drafts of his novel Snipe's Spinster (1975), Man, Not Man (1975), and Common Factors/Vulgar Fractions (1977), a commentary on suburban life in the first half of the twentieth-century.
