Description
LOUIS, Joe (1914-1981). Signed Newspaper Insert or Handbill. Halftone image of Louis (“The Brown Bomber”) in his boxing trunks and gloves during the height of his career. Inscribed by Louis at the lower left corner: “To Frank Young from a Pal Joe Louis 6/14/41”. Sight approximately 13 ¼ x 8 ½”. Matted and framed under glass. Frame size approximately 16 ½ x 11 ½”. Fine. Not examined out of frame. This was inscribed by Louis four days before his legendary bout versus Billy Conn (1917-1993), considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight boxing bouts of all time. Louis won this match, but had clearly (when commenting on Conn’s “hit and run” strategy, Louis famously quipped “He can run, but he can’t hide”) underestimated the nimble and clever Conn. A rematch had been scheduled for 1942, but World War II delayed their rematch until 1946.
