This exquisite model of a horse is based on the famous equestrian group by the French Animalier sculptor Pierre Jules Mene known as 'L'Accolade'. L'Accolade is one of Mêne's more celebrated works, and depicts a courting Arab mare and stallion. L'Accolade was first exhibited as a red wax sculpture with a thin black patina at the Salon of 1852, entitled Tachiani and Nedjebe. His first bronze version was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1855, where Mêne won a medal for the work.
