Description
Significant Edgefield South Carolina Enslaved Potter Abram Double Handle Sorghum Jug that has a strong attribution to slave potter Abrams, and this vessel doesn't disappoint. The classic Edgefield bulbous form to tapering base and large block strap handles point to the slave potter Abram and also one theory points to his large block style lug lifter handles and these handles do as well. This jug has five punctates for gallon capacity, also two different slashes at base. Glaze is outstanding and has a tooled collared rim treatment. Heavy ironized body glaze with heavy fly ash and glass melted at the top of the handle terminals. Again significant collector grade example for both Museum and private collection. Fresh from an estate. Condition, minor rim chip and had a stress-crazing line from pebble or rock in the clay body that caused this. Note this is not a hairline and the jug holds water and rings true. No hairlines or repairs. Standing 16 3/8" Tall
