Choice Original Copy of Benjamin Franklin's
"Pennsylvania Gazette" January 30, 1749-50
January 30, 1749-50 (1750 new calendar) Colonial Era, Newspaper, "The Pennsylvania Gazette", Philadelphia, 4 pages, Complete and Original, disbound, Extremely Fine.
Boldly printed with a choice illustrated Masthead with the words "Mercy Justice", printed on fine quality clean high quality period rag paper. There are four large graphic illustrations for sailing ships on pages 3 & 4. The news includes Indian affairs in Maine including the Norridgewalk Tribe who profess to live in peace with the American Colonial settlers, followed by a letter from Halifax, Nova Scotia, concerning 300 men of the St. Johns Cape Micemeas, and some of the St, Francis and Penobscot Tribes who broke a treaty and fired at the Minas Fort for 7-8 nights without effect. However, on their retreat they "took a party of 18 men and women at some distance from the fort" including several Colonial officers. Eventually some prisoners were released, and the tribe members then made off with silver from settlers along the way home.
This historic Benjamin Franklin newspaper also contains several notices offering Slaves for sale, and both Slaves and Indentured Servants who have "run away" from their masters.
As a number of subscribers to the Gazette were obviously in arrears, Franklin published the following notice on page 4: "All Persons indebted to B. Franklin, for a year's Gazette, or more, are desired to pay." Benjamin Franklin original printed newspapers of this high quality seldom, if ever, seem to appear on the market today. A choice example for display.
