Description
De BRY, Johann Theodore (1560-1623); Johann Israel de Bry (1565-1609) and Ulrich SCHMIDEL (ca. 1510-1579).
Americae Pars VII. Ver[issim]a et iucund[issim]a descriptio praecipuarum quarundam Indiae Occidentalis...
Frankfurt: Theodore de Bry, 1625. Second edition in Latin.
Folio (14” x 9 1/2”). With an engraved allegorical title-page and four engraved vignettes.
Bound in modern green morocco gilt, all edges gilt, by Pratt.
In 1588, Theodor de Bry began his Grands Voyages , a multi-volume collection of the exploration of the Americas (the Petits Voyages treat Africa and Asia), such that each volume was stand-alone. De Bry’s Voyages are particularly sought-after (a full set sold for more than a quarter-million dollars in January 2024) for their rich illustrations.
The present item is the seventh (of an eventual thirteen parts with two addenda), giving Schmidel’s account of his journey to Argentina and Paraguay. Schmidel accompanied the conquistador Pedro de Mendoza to Argentina where he fought for the colonisation of the Rio de la Plata. In 1546 he accompanied Irala on his expedition to Peru as far as the foot of the Andes.
