PENNSYLVANIA NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
Dated 1833
Shows Quaker influence, particularly in the floral designs and the pair of facing birds, a Quaker symbol of marriage. Wrought by "Sarah Leeke 1833". Genealogical research indicates Sarah Leeke was born in June 1815 in Warrington, Pennsylvania. Upper section with a single alphabet above a variety of flowering and fruiting plants flanked by four sets of initials. Verse "This work in hands my friends may have When I am in the silent grave ..." at center. Lower section with potted and other flowering plants, the pair of birds perched on vines, and two sets of initials flanking a floral vine that encloses the maker's inscription. Strawberry vine border.
