Description
Native American, Western United States, Southern Plains, Kiowa culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of leggings made from leather with a lengthy fringe and beadwork along the ankle hem. This would have covered the top of the moccasins and calf / shin area of the wearer, which was important for protection when traveling through scrubland on horseback. Beadwork plays a significant role in Kiowa ceremonies and dances- the Sun Dance and the Gourd Dance, for example, often feature dancers wearing regalia adorned with intricate beadwork. The Kiowa people originated in the northern plains of Montana and migrated to the southern plains, before forcible relocation to Oklahoma reservations in the late 19th century. A rare matching pair that were likely for personal use rather than sale! Size: 19" L x 6" W (48.3 cm x 15.2 cm)
