Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes (Paquime) culture, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1060 to 1340 CE. Superb and extremely rare pottery olla in the form of a fish. Oblong jar with four extended fins and fanned tail with amusing face with raised eyes and circular mouth. Vessel liberally painted in red and black on light orange pottery. Four suspension holes located front and rear so vessel could be hung out of the reach of children, dogs, raccoons or other pests. A very lovely example! Size: 9.5" L x 6.5" W x 4.75" H (24.1 cm x 16.5 cm x 12.1 cm)

International awareness of the culture first derived from its polychrome pottery and from the massive ruins of the culture's principal center, Casas Grandes - also known as Paquime.
Provenance: Private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000.

Repaired and restored. Rim, fins, and tail are new material. Break line on base is infilled and overpainted. Scattered manganese deposits.
