Item Details
Description
North America, Alaska, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 400,000 to 10,000 years ago. A stunning fossilized tusk from a woolly mammoth with incredible areas of natural dark blue! This is a large fragmentary piece from the tip and curving slightly with splintered areas that reveal the cementum and dentine layers within. Along the inner midsection is the coveted mottled blue which naturally occurs through the process of mineralization - after the animal's death this tusk lay in soil containing the mineral vivianite. Vivianite deposits often occur in gold mines, and during the Alaskan gold rush of the 1890s miners and fortune seekers often discovered these priceless remains while digging for gold. The tusk is mounted on a custom stand with a polished wood base and ready to display. Mammoths are one of the most memorable examples of Ice Age megafauna that most people will instantly recognize; their tusks are a special part of any prehistoric and fossil collection. Size of tusk along curve: 41.5" L x 2.5" W (105.4 cm x 6.4 cm); 35.5" H (90.2 cm) on included custom stand.

This is an ESA antique exempt piece of mammoth ivory and cannot be sold to certain countries and anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. Please check your country's laws before bidding on this piece. We guarantee that the piece is over 100 years old.
