Item Details
Description
North America, Western United States, Green River Formation, Eocene Period, ca. 56 to 33 million years ago. A large fish fossil of a Phareodus encaustus, in a limestone matrix with great preservation to both bones and soft tissue. This was a predatory freshwater fish, and the teeth on this specimen are on full display in the slightly parted mouth - tiny needles for feeding upon smaller species, like prehistoric Knightia. The spine, operculum gill cover, tail, and fins are well preserved and the darker caramel hues contrast well with the lighter stone surrounding. Size: 10" L x 7" W (25.4 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Berthoud, Colorado, USA collection
