Cabinet Card photograph of the daughters of Comanche Chief Esa-Habet. Fort Sill, Indian Territory: W.S. Soule, n.d. Photographer's imprint to verso. Contemporary and modern pencil inscription to verso identify the subjects.
Chief Esa-Habet was also known as “Friend of Everybody,” and served as a liaison between white settlers and his tribe regarding prisoners. His daughters appear in tribal dress in front of Soule’s rustic painted backdrop. Soule worked at Fort Sill during a relatively peaceful period from roughly 1869-1874, and during that time made many fascinating images of indigenous people who took refuge there, including this one. He abandoned the area after the outbreak of the brutal Red River War.
