Item Details
Description
Full-length studio portrait of General William Tecumseh Sherman in uniform. New York: [Jose Maria] Mora, July 1876. Photographer's imprint to mount recto. Inscribed "Taken in July 1876" to mount verso. WITH Seated half length studio portrait of Maria "Minnie" Ewing Sherman Fitch (1851-1913). [Washington, D.C.]: [Dillon], [circa 1875]. Inscribed "Minnie Sherman" and "Dillon / 1227 Pa Ave / Washington D.C." to mount verso.

Two cabinet card photographs that show General William T. Sherman and his daughter Maria "Minnie" Ewing Sherman Fitch (1851-1913), respectively. The General stands in a studio recreation of ramparts. His foot rests upon a small cannon and he holds a pair of binoculars, with his other hand placed on his hip. He wears his general's uniform adorned with two medals and shoulder straps that feature the United States coat of arms flanked by stars, a design he implemented in 1872. Though typically wearing a different hat in other photographs, here he wears his velvet trimmed kepi with insignia.

Other views from the session with Mora are known, and typically date to 1877. However, the verso here dates the image to July 1876. This particular full length view of the General looking to the right is quite scarce. The image is reproduced in Clara Louise Kellogg's “Memoirs of an American Prima Donna,” where she recalls her friendship with General Sherman.

The name and address written here on the verso of Minnie’s photograph are in reference to a photographer who operated at 1227 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. from the mid 1870s until at least 1883 (an advertisement appears in Georgetown College's College Journal, Vol. XI, No. 7, April 1883). The image was likely taken around the time of Minnie’s marriage to Thomas Fitch at St. Aloysius Church in Washington D.C. on 1 October 1874.

These portraits, along will all the other Sherman-related lots in this catalog, are offered directly from Minnie Sherman Fitch's descendants.
