Description
A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF MAITREYA, PRE-KHMER PERIOD

Northeast Thailand, early 8th century. The Future Buddha standing on a flat square base in a slight tribhanga. The slender body clothed only in a short sarong neatly tied with a cord, his serene face with almond-shaped eyes and full lips flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair arranged in a jatamukuta with finely incised, towering locks centered by a small stupa.

Provenance
: From the collection of Rene Ronveaux (d. 1991), Belgium, probably acquired in the Luxembourg or Belgian trade during the 1980s, and thence by descent to Robert Ronveaux (b. 1955). A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Robert Ronveaux, dated 11 September 2023, confirming the above, accompanies this lot.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, corrosion, casting flaws, nicks, scratches, minor losses. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite encrustations.

Compare a closely related bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara, 8th-9th century, 38.1 cm tall, in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, accession number 54.2963. Compare a closely related bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara, second half of the 7th-8th century, 34.9 cm tall, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1987.145.
