Description
Offered here for your consideration are two antique machetes and one Texian fighting knife. The first machete has a 17 7/8 inch blade with fullers on both sides. It is 22 5/8 inches in overall length. It has celluloid grip panels and is accompanied by a leather sheath with a thin leather belt. It is stamped Best Sheffield Cast Steel. The second machete is 21 3/4 inches overall with a 15 3/8 inch by 1 7/8 inch blade. It has and embellished handle with a Buddha type head. The handle is made of a bakelite type material. The Texian fighting knife was made by Hiram Cutler. It has an overall length of 15 inches with a 10 by 1 5/8 inch blade. The scales appear to be rosewood and it is in the style of the first Bowie knives. Cutler mass produced these knives for the fighters in Texas during the war for independence.
MAKER: The Texian fighting knife was made by Hiram Cutler (1788-1867). Russell (1967) notes that in the autumn of 1836, after the fall of the Alamo and after the news of the Bowie knife had reached England, Hiram sent to the American Fur Co a sketch of a ‘Texian knife that would probably suit Indians’.
