Offered here for your consideration is a G. Wostenholm and Son Bowie knife with sheath. This knife was manufactured in the mid to late 1800's. The left side of the blade is marked in gold leaf with the word DEFIANCE and the I-XL trademark on the ricasso. The grip has a fully visible tang with an elliptical German silver guard and what appears to be imitation tortoise shell scales with a German silver escutcheon on the left panel. The sheath is brown leather with a gold leaf scroll and German silver fittings. Add this nice knife to your collection today.
MAKER: G. Wostenholm and Son. Wostenholm acquired the mark in 1826. Wostenholm was a great salesman and made more than 30 trans-Atlantic trips on dangerous sailing ships, with trips lasting weeks and being very dangerous. His knives, bu the mid-nineteenth century were some of the most famous in America. By the 1850s, he increased production of their most famous product, the Bowie knife.
APPROX AGE: Antique (meaning made prior to the 1930s).
SIZE: This knife measures 1 inch wide x 11 3/8 inches long, with a 7 1/4 inch blade.
