Elmer Elsworth Spenner Indiana / California (1894-1975) figures in an office interior oil on board signed lower left. Biography from the Archives of askART: These Notes represent the beginning of a possible future biography for this artist. Please click here if you wish to help in its development. Born in Lone Pine, Nebraska on April 7, 1894. Spenner settled in Indianapolis in 1901. He was a successful Ford dealer until the early 1930s and then retired to pursue an art career. He first studied at the Herron Art School in Indianapolis and then continued in New York City at the Art Students League and with William M. Chase and Frank V. DuMond for three years. After 1935 he spent winters in Los Angeles where his painting style matured as he was drawn to painting ethnic types and portrait commissions. He died in Indianapolis in June 1975.
