19th C. 'sandpaper painting' after a popular print showing Mt. Vernon with Washington's Tomb, in charcoal on marble-dust coated paper. Handwritten beneath the image: "View of Mt. Vernon". Mr. Long's note on the painting, likely transcribed from an oral source or possibly written on the back of the painting and now hidden by the frame, reads: " 'Mount Vernon, The Tomb of Washington. Given to my husband E. A. Langdon. Some of my early work. Alice V. Stowe." with the notation, "Vermont". In period maple frame. Frame approx. 27" x 21". Sight, approx. 18" x 12". Provenance: the estate of John Long, highly regarded Virginia antiques dealer and collector.
