Description
Watercolor and gouache on heavy stock game or chess board, every other square with a finely painted scene showing a picturesque sight, including Stonehenge, Calshot Castle, Dover, Osborne House, various country churches, landscapes, and harbour scenes, thirty two miniature paintings total, all no doubt places of interest in England and, possibly, beyond. The border is decoratively painted with foliate scrolls, butterflies, and floral garlands. Condition is good, with some toning on the right side and a moisture stain on one of the bottom blank squares. No signature but written at bottom right: "Vor Ista Fecit 1861" (Latin for "Done in 1861.") Framed under glass. Surface damage to much of gilt frame. Frame, approx. 29" x 29 1/2". Game board, approx. 20" x 20".Provenance: the estate of John Long, highly regarded Virginia antiques dealer and collector.
