North America, Native American, Midwest, Eastern Woodland, ca. 500 to 1750 CE. A hefty stone axe head carved from a mottled gray and brown stone with a groove that runs nearly the entire width of the stone, making this a three-quarter groove axe. The long blade is offset and hangs lower then the butt end. This large head may have been hafted onto a handle and held in place with cord or sinew. Size: 7.5" L x 4.5" W (19 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection, ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier
