Description
Varaha Papier-Mache Mask, India, 20th C. Size: 13'' x 9'' x 11'' (33 x 23 x 28 cm). This paper mache mask of a beautifully animated boar represents the Hindu god Varaha, as indicated by the V-shape mark on the forehead, the tusks and the green and gold decorations around the head.Varaha is the third incarnation of Vishnu and is most known for the legend of rescuing the Earth from a demon by carrying it out of the water on its tusks. The demon, Hiranyaksha, is known for being selfish and materialistic, so Varaha represents straying from materialistic needs and focusing on spiritual awakening.Mask-making is an indigenous practice all over India, used in performance and parades to honor and celebrate Hindu deities. This mask is made using papier-mache technique, the paper recycled from old newsprint. It was then painted and ready to be worn by a dancer or actor.
