Description
Forest landscape with Diana and AktaionThe goddess of hunting Diana sits on a pond and is decorated by the nymphs after the bathroom. A nymph discovered the hunter Aktaion, who is already fleeing after he has seen the goddess unauthorized. Unusually, Diana and the nymphs are dressed, while most representations use the topic to show the beauty of bare women, as is also the case with the myth of Ovid in the metamorphoses. The unintentional offense Akaion was to have seen Diana naked, which is why he was transformed into a deer by her so that his own hunting dogs tear him. A motif -rich floral border frames the carpet. The figure types, the representation of the treetops with round leaf tufts and the large acanthus plants as well as the border are typical of the baroque carpets from the manufacturers of Aubusson in central France. 392 x 270 cm
