Description
Of tapering vasiform with scalloped everted lip, the neck flanked by a pair of large and small Buddhist lions (Dashi Xiaoshi), and two pairs of sinuous dragons on the shoulder; the body decorated on one side with a battle scene, the other side with various generals and courtiers in a pavilion setting; two additional smaller figural reserves to the neck, and shaped reserves to the body, all against a ground of birds, flowers and auspicious fruits; together with an associated elaborate Japanese carved and lacquered wood stand

Robert Schmidt-Hamburg was a German artist best known today for his Marine portraits and atmospheric landscapes. He travelled widely throughout the world pursuing subjects and commissions, both private and for major shipping concerns. According to family history, the present vase was acquired in Hong Kong during these travels.
