Qing Dynasty - Castiglione's exquisite silk scroll depicting Emperor Qianlong's pursuit of wonders Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), a Catholic Jesuit monk and painter, was born in Milan, Italy. He came to China as a missionary in 1715 (the fifty-fourth year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty) and immediately entered the imperial palace as a court painter. He worked in the three dynasties of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong and engaged in painting in China for more than 50 years. He also participated in the design of the Western-style Building in the Old Summer Palace and served as a painter for the Qing Dynasty court. One of the top ten painters.
