Description
A magnificent jug as an allegory of air, Meissen, Knauf Schwerter, mark 1850-1924, 1st choice, from a series of the four elements, designed by Johann Joachim Kaendler, c. 1741 - 1742. Model no. 327, The oval foot surmounted by a bulbous body with a stepped, retracted neck and a wide spout in relief. The sides with draped, royal blue painted handle. The front decorated with various mythological figures and elements symbolizing the air, some in full relief. Spout and foot surrounded by feather reliefs. Between clouds in relief flying cranes, ducks and eagles as well as fully sculpted putti with dove and bagpipes. Seated to the side, the crowned goddess Juno with a sceptre in an antique pink robe patterned with gold blossoms, accompanied by a peacock as her attribute. Insects and butterflies on a white background at the neck of the jug. Fine polychrome painting with gold rim. unrestored, h. 66 cm, ref.: Bergmann, Meissen Figuren 1-3000, p. 426
