Description
A splendid jug as an allegory of water, Meissen, Knauf Schwerter, mark 1850-1924, 1st choice, from a series of the four elements, designed by Johann Joachim Kaendler, c. 1741 - 1742. Model no. 320, The oval foot surmounted by a bulbous body with a stepped, retracted neck and a wide spout in relief. Laterally curved handle in bundled reed leaves with crowning cupid. Heavily relief-modeled, partly fully modeled decoration of naturalistic and mythological elements of the marine world as a symbol of the element of water. Large dolphins swimming between seaweed on the foot, the wall in relief with a nereid emerging from the sea with four hippocampi. On the shoulder of the vessel is Neptune, the god of the sea, sitting in a shell. Circumferentially undulating sea surface with a depiction of a war fleet on the front. At the neck of the jug large aquatic insects such as dragonflies, beetles and mosquito larvae on a white background.
