John Marshall was a prominent American statesman and jurist who served as the fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1801 until his death in 1835. As Chief Justice, Marshall had a profound and lasting impact on the development of American constitutional law including his influential opinions, most notably in cases such as Marbury v. Madison (1803) and McCulloch v. Maryland (1819), Marshall helped establish the principles of judicial review and federal supremacy. His tenure as Chief Justice strengthened the role of the Supreme Court in interpreting the Constitution and defining the scope of federal power.
