Mikhail Gorbachev Signed Photo Receiving the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award
Signed Photo
A color photograph of Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan signed by Gorbachev. Measuring 8" x 10", N.p., n.d. Signed "M. Gorbachev" in Cyrillic letters at upper right. Showing former President Ronald Reagan presenting the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award to ex-President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev in 1992. Printed on Kodak photo paper. Near fine. Boldly signed.
Reagan and Gorbachev thawed Cold War tensions following their first historic meeting at Geneva, Switzerland in November 1985. Committed to reducing the risk of nuclear proliferation and war, Reagan and Gorbachev closely collaborated in order to pass mutually agreeable pacts and ban treaties throughout the late 1980s. The pair had long talks, walks, and dinners, and exchanged letters, reaching what approached a true friendship. Gorbachev was very aggrieved when he heard of Reagan's death. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute presents its highest civilian honor, the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award, to "those who have made monumental and lasting contributions to the cause of freedom worldwide." Its first honoree was Mikhail Gorbachev. Reagan himself presented the award to Gorbachev on May 4, 1992, at the newly completed Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Since then, the Foundation has dispensed Ronald Reagan Freedom Awards to worthy recipients including Margaret Thatcher, Yitzhak Rabin, and Lech Walesa.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
