Elbridge Gerry 1811 DS as Governor Appointing Justice of the Peace
Partially printed DS

Partial-printed DS, measuring 9.25" x 14.75", Boston, MA, dated February 21, 1811. A document naming Sherman Leland of Eastport "to be one of our Justices of the Peace, within and for the County of Washington for and during the term of seven years?". Signed by then-Governor Elbridge Gerry as "E. Gerry" at top left margin and countersigned by Secretary of the Commonwealth Benjamin Homans at lower middle. The document's original seal has been retained. Features expected folds with darkened soiling along top edge; slightly uneven margins throughout. Very good overall with clear signature.

Founding Father Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814) signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, but declined to signed the Constitution because it did not include a Bill of Rights. Gerry later served as the 9th Governor of Massachusetts between June 1810 and June 1812. He was also Vice President during the Madison administration.

Sherman Leland (1783-1853) was a Massachusetts lawyer who served in the House of Representatives, and as a member, and later President of, the Massachusetts Senate. During the War of 1812, he served in a regiment of U.S. Volunteers, and subsequently the 34th U.S. Infantry, at Eastport, Maine.
