John Adams DS Finest We Have Handled. Superb Bold Huge Signature!

John Adams DS signed days after losing the election to Jefferson in political realignment that ushered in a generation of Democratic-Republican leadership.

DS, 14.25" x 11", matted to a size of 27" x 17", Washington D.C., dated January 27, 1801, appointing James Wilson to "Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Artillerists & Engineers" The gorgeous appointment is boldly signed by President John Adams as "John Adams", and countersigned by the Acting Secretary of War & Secretary of Treasury Samuel Dexter as "Sam'l Dexter". Expected folds and toning that do not detract from the impeccable document which is the finest we have handled.

John Adams was an American statesman, attorney, diplomat, writer, and Founding Father who was the second president of the United States, serving from 1797 to 1801.

Signed just days after the 1800 election in what is sometimes referred to as the "Revolution of 1800", Vice President Thomas Jefferson of the Democratic-Republican Party defeated incumbent President John Adams of the Federalist Party.

The chief political issues during the election revolved around the fallout from the French Revolution and the Quasi-War. The Federalists favored a strong central government and close relations with Great Britain. The Democratic-Republicans favored decentralization to the state governments. The Democratic-Republicans attacked the taxes the Federalists imposed and denounced the Alien and Sedition Acts, which the Federalists had passed to make it harder for immigrants to become citizens and to restrict statements critical of the federal government. The Democratic-Republicans were well organized at the state and local levels, but the Federalists were disorganized and suffered a bitter split between their two major leaders, Adams and Alexander Hamilton. The jockeying for electoral votes, regional divisions, and the propaganda smear campaigns created by both parties made the election recognizably modern.
