Archive

A collection of three 20th-century prints of Paul Revere's engraving copperplate representing The Boston Massacre. Of various sizes, the smallest is 9" x 12.25" and the largest is 13" x 15.5", all circa 1970. Produced as restrikes from the original plate. Two are colored prints and one is printed in black and white. The prints depict the bloody scene perpetrated in King Street, when on March 5, 1770, a group of nine soldiers from the 29th Regiment fired into a hostile Boston crowd who were harassing them verbally and throwing various projectiles. The prints have very faint toning and wear. Overall very fine.

In 1970, the Imprint Society approached the Secretary of the Commonwealth and the Archivist of the Commonwealth with a request to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Boston Massacre by releasing restrikes taken from Revere's original plate. After some deliberation, it was determined that a limited number of restrikes could be produced without causing any damage to the plate, and the Imprint Society published the restrikes into a limited edition series of books. The colored prints showcase the use of propaganda by those who colored it, who specifically highlight the violence while the black and white version truly highlights the detail that Revere included in his original engraving. Revere's engraving was used to spark anger throughout the colonies, and the Boston Massacre was one of the most significant events that turned colonial sentiment against King George III and the British government.
