Description
Revolutionary War
[London, England], Late 18th century
Late 18th C. Rev. War Engraving, "Preliminary Articles of Peace between Great Britain & France," from "Barnard's History"
Engraving

An engraving from "Barnard's New, Comprehensive and Complete History of England: From the Earliest Period of Authentic Information to the Middle of the Year MDCCCLXXXIII."?Originally the book was "Printed for the Author and Published by Alex. Hogg, at No. 16, Pater-Noster Row" ca. 1781-1783, but this engraving could come from a later 1790s edition. Expected wear including scattered minor foxing. Else near fine. Trimmed to an overall size of 8.875" x 14.25."

The engraving is entitled in full: "The Preliminary Articles of Peace between Great Britain & France and Great Britain and Spain, Signed at Versailles Jany. 20, 1783, by Mr. Fitzherbert his Britannic Majesty's Ambassador & Minister Plenipotentiary, and the Ministers Plenipotentiary of the Courts of France & Spain - Which were Ratified in Form on Feby. the 3d. & 9th 1783, the Exchanges being then made by and with the said Ambassadors." After artist William Hamilton (1751-1801) and by engraver Robert Pollard (1755-1838). On laid paper. Printed "Engraved for Barnard's New Complete & Authentic History of England" along the top. Printed "Hamilton delin." at lower left, and "Pollard sculp." at lower right, above the title/caption. With lovely decorative elements and figural vignettes in the trompe l'oeil borders surrounding the image.

A provisional peace treaty between America, Great Britain, France, and Spain was signed on January 20, 1783, resulting in an end to hostilities. Spain delayed signing until February 3, 1783. The terms of the peace treaty were energetically negotiated over the next seven months, meaning that the American Revolution did not officially conclude until the final version, the Treaty of Paris, was signed on September 3, 1783.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
